CIM will stage major conference in Suffolk CIM conference
A MAJOR marketing conference featuring five top speakers is to be. staged in Suffolk laster this month.
The Chartered Institute of Marketing/East of England Network for Interactive Marketing event takes place at the Swallow Belstead Brook Hotel in Ipswich on Thursday, October 21.
Keynote speaker at the conference will be "futurologist" Professor Peter Cochrane, who was head of BT Research at Martlesham Heath, near Ipswich, from 1993 to 1999.
In November 2000 he formed his own start-up company, ConceptLabs, which has been instrumental in the success of businesses such as eBookers.
Prof Cochrane is a fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Royal Academy of Engineering and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
He has published and lectured widely on technology and the implications of IT and was awarded an OBE in 1999 for his contribution to international communications.
His address at the CIM/EENIM conference in Ipswich will be tailored towards delivering an insight on all the marketing areas embraced by the other speakers.
They include Jim Brackin, founder of psychographic marketing consultancy ESP, Paul Hicks, a specialist in growing and turning around consumer businesses, Rob Townsdend, business development director at Millennium pic, and Patrick Smith, chief executive at insurance intermediary Swinton.
Jim Brack in is a qualified hypnotherapist and also worked as a creative director for more than 18 years before founding ESP in 2000.
Marketing and hypnosis essentially have the same underlying objective, he says - to change or maintain the behaviour of an individual or group - and at the conference he will be talking about the tools and techniques needed to achieve these objectives.
Paul Hicks became chief executive of Lee Cooper in 1998 - following spells with Metal Box pic, Pernod-Ricard, Waterford Wedgwood and Allied Distilleries - and went on to transform the company through product innovation.
He is currently chairman of Maximuscle, the UK's leading sports nutrition company, and at the conference will be sharing his thoughts and experiences on the reinvention of mature brands.
Rob Townsend has more than 11 years' experience in the advertising industry, with a background spanning both client-side and agency-side work, from strategic and brand initiatives with businesses such as Churchill and HSBC to new product and service offerings across a range of sectors.
Millennium pic was founded in 1996 to focus exclusively on the "mature" market and is now one of the fastest growing agencies in the UK.
In addition to being a full-service advertising agency, it has developed the specialist product GreyPower - a database of some 500,000 UK mature consumers built-up from our ongoing lifestyle surveys.
Patrick Smith, who besides his chief executive role at Swinton is executive chairman of its4me, an internet motor broker, previously worked for Norwich union for 28 years and has been responsible for building businesses across all areas of life, healthcare and general insurance.
Most notably, he was managing director of Norwich Union Direct, responsible for the launch and rapid development of the business to more than one million customers.
At the conference, he will be providing an insight into the marketing challenges for traditional versus new media insurance businesses.
The CIM/EENIM Autum Marketing Conference, which will run from 10am to 5pm, is being sponsored by Business Link for Suffolk, the "one stop shop" for impartial business advice, The Point, the
